Should I Get a Credit Card?

I'm 19 and go to university, I am unemployed (by choice) and was wondering if I should get my own credit card. And if so, which company offers the best deal for students.

I was wondering if making minimal payments (maybe even no payments throughout a month) with a credit card is a good or bad thing. I have read that you should try to use it for the first couple of months and pay them back to build up a credit history then you can "bury the card".

Thanks and any other information welcome.

Suggestion:

From what i understand is that you don't have a credit card which in my eyes is awesome, but of course this country looks at your credit as a way to see how you contribute to society. Now, if you are going to get a card I don't have your answer for which would be your best card out there, but there are a few sites that do compare all credit cards available out there. To your question I would answer Yes, and only because another big thing is credit history and the older the card the better, good or bad. But please keep your cards in good standing and don't stick with your min. payment. Always add on as much as you feel comfortable with. And keep your GPA up there.

Well it's not a bad idea to get a credit card to help establish your credit history. Your best option is to pay the balance in full each month when you get the statement. Ideally you should use the card at least once every six months to keep the card "active" on your credit report.

With that being said, most credit card companies require you have a minimal income of $7500/year. So with you not working it's unlikely you'll be able to get a credit card. If you do want to try though i would recommend an easy card to get, like a store card (Target, Macy's, etc.).

No.

Do not go into debt to "build credit". Save up and pay for stuff. Do not buy into the lie that you need credit to succeed.
