1. call the company the debt is with, get as much information as possible and notify them of the fraud. they will also give some advice.
2. file a police report, send a copy to the company the debt is with
3. get a notarized letter stating the debt is not yours and send it to the company the debt is with and the reporting agencies

If it is a large amount of money, you may want to contact a lawyer.

You need to file disputes with the credit bureaus for any information that is inaccurate. You can do that online by visiting each bureau's Web site.

Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act you have the right to request written validation of negative entries on your credit files. Per this law they must validate the item(s) within 30 days or remove them from your credit file. Mail a letter via certified mail with return receipt to all three credit bureaus (Equifax, TransUnion & Experian). Include a photocopy of your driver's license and social security card…If you don't include these, they may write back requesting them, which would slow the process down by several weeks. For each negative item, write a separate letter and simply include the phrase:

Per the Fair Credit Reporting Act, I am requesting written validation of this item.

Do this one at a time for each negative entry….DO NOT request validation for all items at one time.

1. obtain a correct copy of your credit report. i would recommend myfico.com
2. see all the items that you dont recognize, or older than 7 years and then write a letter disputing them. http://www.myfico.com can help you prepare this letter.
3. Dispute everything on there that you believe not to be yours.
4. send my certified mail to the credit reporting agencies.

also keep in mind. debt collection companies have 30 days once they receive your dispute letter to prove that this is in fact your debt. this is really hard to prove especially for unsecured debts ( those include credit cards, cells phone, cable bills, ect) secured debts are more hard to remove those would be bankruptcies, car repos, foreclosures)
